occurs when entities inhabit or attach themselves to a physical object. This object can be as small as a piece of jewelry or a talisman, a statue, painting or other a piece of art or a piece of furniture. The object can also be a house, an apartment or an entire building. It can also be a part of nature, like a brook or a river.
Some consider an attachment to a tree or to an animal to be infestation, but because trees and animals are living beings, I do not share this opinion. For me, infestation is about habitation. Because spirits and demons are non-material, and their “home turf” is a dimension of existence beyond the material, there is no reason why their incursions into the material world need be limited in any way.
The spirit is simply “inhabiting” or, more accurately, “attached” to a physical object, using that object as an “anchor” into our physical realm.
When a living being is involved, it makes more sense to me to consider this type of demonic affliction to be a case of oppression, which I describe below.
Because there are limits to what an entity or demon can do with what is usual an “inanimate” object, the manifestations of infestation are usually creepy, but mostly innocuous – apparitions, the sound of footsteps or voices, odors that come from nowhere, objects that move without human agency. Classic “hauntings”, while often interpreted as the activities of “restless spirits of the dead” might well be the doings of spiritual beings with the simple intent of amusing themselves at the expense of humans.
Or, if they are more malicious, or perhaps experienced in the material realm, the infestation can escalate to oppression.

Although the classical interpretation of oppression is to human beings only, I see oppression more as occurring with any living being. Oppression implies the first level of affliction or violation of the personal boundary of the mind or body of a living being. It might well be that demons too have their “apprenticeships” and that once they pass the “class” in
infestation, they can move on to oppression. Perhaps they start with animals first, before moving on to human beings, but this is speculation on my part.
Oppression is the area of operation in which “psychic attacks” happen.
With manifestations at a personal level, the afflicted experiences feelings of unease that can escalate to anxiety, or a weight on the soul that can escalate to depression. Sleep disturbances are common and can escalate to recurring, persistent, increasingly nightmares and night terrors.
Health problems can occur and can become frequent, severe or even life-threatening illnesses – mental, emotional, physical either originating in, or exacerbated by, spiritual illness. I would also argue that many substance abuse and addictions have their origin in some form of demonic oppression.
At an interpersonal level, relationships can experience disturbances and, in the more serious cases, recurring patterns of dysfunction, abuse, exploitation and failure.
Inexplicable problems with employment or financial difficulties are also common although, sometimes, paradoxically, The Afflicted might be doing very well at a material level, if only so that The Afflicted has sufficient material means to continue to be demonically exploited at other levels.
After all, if you eventually want someone to fall far and hard, it’s a good strategy to ensure that they rise far and hard too. You need to get behind someone before you stab them in the back. The important thing to note about oppression, is that since there are no demonically related thoughts or feelings at this stage, it’s very easy to simply shrug the signs and symptoms of oppression as manifestations of “conventional”, low-level, mental or emotional illness, or even just the failures of a “weak” personality.
PLEASE NOTE: Although it is not commonly acknowledged as such, addictions, whether they are chemical or drug addictions, or behavioral, like gambling and sex addictions, can also be the result of oppression. This is especially true if the addictions have resisted persistent, even aggressive, conventional intervention. In such cases the possibility that such addictions need to be treated as manifestations of Spiritual Affliction, should at least be considered and dealt with accordingly.
The Catholic Church recognizes another stage – physical pain. This is perhaps more a symptom rather than a stage of incursion, since to produce pain, some level of oppression must have already occurred and is manifesting as a physical sensation rather than just a collection of negative thoughts and feelings.

While even severe manifestations of oppression are often dismissed as simply “bad luck”, “poor decision making” or “mental illness” or “emotional illness” (all of which might be true), it is at the point of obsession that the afflicted first begin to suspect that there is something more going on than just a “conventional” or “material” problem.
This feeling, however, can vacillate because, especially in The West, there is little cultural support for the idea of demonic affliction.
In a state of oppression, The Afflicted endlessly ruminates on thoughts related to The Devil or demons.
The Afflicted also obsesses with existential feelings of dread. If their worldview allows it, there is a persistent feeling in the afflicted that it is not just one’s sanity at risk, but one’s very soul. Thoughts of death and suicide predominate, accompanied by the fear that if one actually goes through with self-murder, that an eternity in hell awaits. The feeling of fear and terror is almost constant.
In more extreme cases The Afflicted is tormented with impulses, fantasies or outright visions of injuring, abusing and killing or of being injured, abused or killed in every way imaginable. In this sense, the obsession with particular thoughts and feelings evolves into compulsion to act on those feelings.
If substance abuse has not already occurred, then by this stage it will begin as the afflicted desperately attempts self-medication. Sleep is virtually impossible, as the afflicted is constantly worn down by an exhausting, inner struggle. In the more extreme cases the afflicted becomes so dysfunctional that they require hospitalization. In the most tragic cases they commit suicide.

Although possession is the most often depicted form of spiritual affliction, true perfect possession – the total surrender of a person to a demonic entity – is extremely rare.
Possession has two types:
Subjection, as mentioned above, occurs when The Afflicted makes, for whatever reason (and there are many) a conscious invitation to submit to Satan or to demon. But it is the more “involuntary” or “unconscious” type of possession which is the form of spiritual affliction most commonly portrayed in popular culture.
In perfect possession, The Afflicted loses consciousness or enters a state of consciousness where the demons take over.
The body of The Afflicted becomes essentially a puppet to be used by the entity for its own purposes. This happens at the point when the Demon is completely speaking and acting in the body of The Afflicted. The soul is still there, but either weakened to the point of no longer being able to resist the Demon, or, in even rarer cases, the individual has deliberately given up control entirely to the Demon. In either case, the individual is no longer effectively in charge, and when you speak to them, you’re not speaking to them anymore, but directly to the Demon. And when they act, they are not acting, but it is the Demon who is acting.
